Costa Rica Itinerary Overview
Day 1- Monteverde is one of the country’s major ecotourism destinations. The area is home to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and numerous other reserves, which draw considerable numbers of naturalists.
- If you have not had your fill of birds, snakes, bugs, amphibians, butterflies, and bats, you might want to add Monteverde to your visit in Costa Rica. You can also enjoy a stunning variety of orchids growing in the wilderness.Did you know that Monteverde is where zip lining originally started being a tourist attraction? Thrill seekers will love the zip lining!

- Private Transfer Upon Arrival – San Jose (SJO) Intl. Airport – Monteverde. Arrive at the San Jose International Airport on a flight TBD (not included). Upon clearing immigration and customs, exit the airport and meet your driver who will be waiting for 3 hour drive to Monteverde region.

It’s just minutes from the famous Cloud Forest Reserve and much easier to reach than Arenal Volcano. - Guided Tour – Monteverde Reserve Guided Tour. Following an early breakfast, you will be picked up for one of Costa Rica’s most diverse natural history walks. Situated atop the Continental Divide in western Costa Rica, the Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest Preserve extends down both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes. The resulting combination of climatic and geographic factors creates temperature and humidity gradients which change dramatically over relatively short distances. Splendid quetzals and bellbirds fly about the canopy of the forest, and iridescent hummingbirds hover around in search of nectar. Following the tour, return to the hotel.

- Sky Adventure Park: It is a unique system of trails, suspension bridges and zip lines that allows visitors to observe the rainforest from a variety of different vantage points – from above, below and within the canopy itself.
- Santa Elena Reserve Tour: The Santa Elena Cloud Forest is a wonderland of green lushness. Giant tree ferns, bamboo and palm trees grow abundantly in the under story, while thick moss covered liana vines dangle from the canopy.
- Frog Pound: Visitors can admire more than 25 species of native frogs, toads and other amphibians living in large, naturally-simulated terrariums.
- The Butterfly Garden: The biodiversity center displays insects and arachnids that are local to Monteverde, many of which are still alive. This allows visitors to have an up-close and personal experience with the creatures as they learn about their breeding and feeding habits. There is a live bug cam, as well as a case for viewing the butterflies as they emerge from their chrysalides.
- Monteverde Orchid Garden: It is a place where you will discover a collection of more than 460 species of orchids, which throughout the year we always have an average of 120 plants in bloom per day.
- Horseback Riding: Come and enjoy a ride among forest, open fields, coffee and banana crops, see fauna and flora that is specific to the Monteverde area.
- Don Juan Coffee Tour: It offers an interesting opportunity to learn about coffee and Costa Rican folklore. During the coffee tour, participants will learn about the history, cultivation, and operation of a functioning coffee ‘beneficio’.
- El Trapiche Tour: The tour begins with a short walk through the farm where you can get a glimpse of plantations as sugar cane, coffee, bananas, plantains, tubers, oranges and more. Enjoy the entire coffee process, ride a Costarican ox cart and experience the process of making liquor out of the sugar cane, and to finish delight yourself with a fragrant cup of coffee.

At a time TBD, the driver will pick you up for the 2 hour drive through the picturesque mountain of Monteverde. After 2 hour transfer, you will embark on a 30 minute boat ride across Arenal Lake followed by a 15 minute transfer to your hotel.

- Experience the excitement and adrenaline of white water rafting on this half day adventure on the class 2 / 3 Balsa River. After meeting with your river guide we will drive 30 minutes to the put in where the fun begins! Your guides explain the safety procedures and safety equipment before embarking down the river. Enjoy up to 2 exhilarating hours of white-water action on this beautiful tropical river. Get wet and wild through rapids such as “Magnetic Rock” and “Dredges.” Enjoy a swim, some fresh tropical fruits and a cold drink before we head to our lunch spot. Our lunch spot is a tour in itself. - Day 8
- Move to the Papagayo Region – There’s a lot to love about exclusive and secluded Papagayo, but the region’s brilliant sunsets are what will live on in your mind’s eye. They are spectacular! From your oceanside hotel, the view stretches for miles in all directions. Below, a long crescent of gold-flecked sands curve around the protected bay. Papagayo is a beach town unlike any other; in fact, it’s not a town at all! The area is named for the stunning gulf that borders the beach, but there is no official town. (For gridded streets, shops, and other services, head south to Hermosa and Coco beaches.) The result is “developed seclusion” – a Papagayo of many amenities, in a tranquil natural setting. It is this unique blend of tourism and nature that makes Papagayo such an excellent destination.
