Haleakala National Park Summit at Sunset – We Recommend It!

  • Do you drive the Haleakala Summit at Sunset or Sunrise?  This is a common question that we get for those looking to enjoy this phenomenal experience in Maui. We just returned and loved the sunset adventure. We were able to avoid the need for to get a permit (which is required for sunrise viewing).

The Drive

  • Now the drive up the crater is also part of the fun.  It’s a long winding drive up (and down), but the beauty to us is the various ecosystems that experience as you hit different elevation levels.  It’s mandatory to keep a steady pace and eyes on the road (for Nene’s and Cows…yes, Cows!).

Tips

  • Bring layers to stay warm underneath, as the temperature is quite a bit cooler at the top
  • Don’t get discourage about the weather during the drive up, as there are multiple ecosystems on the mountain at all times and it can be cloudy down below (and clear skies at the top)
  • Pay attention to the road to avoid Nenes and Cows (especially early morning or night when it’s dark)
  • There are many hikes and trails at this National Park.  Get out on foot to enjoy!
  • Download the “Gypsy” app on for the trip, as it helps provide some great narrative and history while driving
  • Pack up water and snacks with you
  • Go slow and let people pass if necessary
  • Price to enter Haleakala National Park – $30 per vehicle, $25 per motorcycle, and $15 per pedestrian or bicyclist (effecting starting in 2020)
