Alaska Family Getaway

  • We helped one of our favorite adventure clients (see their previous Iceland Trip) plan an amazing family vacation to Alaska. They were ready to explore one of the amazing US outdoor destinations.  They tracked across the state by plane, train, bus and everything else in between.  It was a memorable vacation for them.  Here are some of the highlights of the trip:

Where Did They Travel?

  • Anchorage – Hotel Captain Cook 
    • Located in the heart of downtown Anchorage, Hotel Captain Cook is a perfect basecamp for adventure, offering the best cultural, retail and natural highlights just steps from the doors. As they are on the edge of downtown you can see amazing views from their rooms of either downtown Anchorage and the Chugach Range or over Cook Inlet.
    • They had a quick stop in Anchorage before heading out to Denali National Park for their amazing adventure.  .

  • Denali – Denali Cabins
    • They arrived at the Denali Cabins, which are located 9 miles south of the park entrance. They provide a peaceful and cozy basecamp for your Denali Adventures away from the crowds. The charming cabins have all the comforts of a standard hotel room.

Activities in Denali

  • Husky Homestead Dog Sledding
    • This was the first activity that the family enjoyed during their trip. This is a really special tour, which allows you to better understand the relationship between musher and dog.   This is a behinds the scene view of the dogs and their arctic survival gear, sleds and racing equipment.
    • Learn about their state-of-the-art dog-powered training carousels and heated dog barn. Soak in 30 years of Alaska dogmushing stories from freight hauling on Denali to crossing the finish line in Nome with a champion Iditarod team. Meet champion sled dogs, cuddle with their puppies and see summer training in action, 1 ½ hour narrated kennel tour, transportation provided from most area hotels with advance notice.
    • Tour Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours from shuttle pick up to drop off at your lodge
 
  • Denali Backcountry Adventure – Full Day Excursion
    • The Denali Backcountry Adventure took them along the full 92.5 mile Denali National Park Road to the amazing Denali Backcountry Lodge. Along the way, the guides gave them the best opportunities to view the legendary beauty of the Denali National Park with breath taking scenery and wildlife sightings such as bears, moose, caribou and more.
    • Step into the wilderness with a short scenic stop at Mile 30 at Teklanika River  before continuing towards Mile46 to view Polychrome Pass. Toklat River  at Mile 53 will be your next opportunity to stretch your legs. You will next traverse to Mile 63 to stop at the Eielson Visitor Center  for dramatic views of Denali as your backdrop. After a complete morning of sightseeing, you will arrive at the idyllic frontier land of Kantishna. Here you will enjoy a unique and hearty creek side buffet lunch at our Miner’ s Day Lodge. After lunch, you could try your hand at gold panning in Moose

Talkeetna – Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge

  • The next stop was Talkeetna. Here they enjoyed the majestic views of the Alaska Range shine. This location is at the doorstop for high-energy outdoor adventures in Denali area and beyond. Inside, there is a crackling fire in a giant river rock fireplace, and award-winning cuisine. Friendly service and a great night’ s sleep.

Activities in Talkeetna

    • K2 Aviation Tour
      • Only the adults enjoyed this adventure, as they explored six miles of the giant summit of Mount Denali, this spectacular flight is the best way to see Denali and its surrounding mountains. Departing from Talkeetna, they saw the glacier-carved valley as they climbed over the foothills of Denali’s six million acre wilderness.

      • They soared over the Tokositna glacier as it winds its way to Denali’s base and descended into the Sheldon Amphitheater on Ruth Glacier.  They also flew through the Great Gorge, which is the world’s deepest. They enjoyed the unforgettable experience of landing on a glacier and seeing the amazing beauty of Denali National Park.

      • Tour Duration: 2.5 hours from shuttle pick up to drop off, 1.5 hour flight time.

The Hotel Alyeska

  • The lasr stop was in Alyeska at Hotel Alyeska. This is a beautiful hotel at the base of the mountains just 40 miles from Anchorage. In the charming town of Girdwood, it has all the pleasures of a luxurious hotel and all the relaxing qualities of being out of the city.
